Identification of Green’s Functions Singularities by Cross Correlation of Noisy Signals

چکیده
In this paper we consider the problem of estimating the singular support of the Green’s function of the wave equation in a bounded region by cross correlating noisy signals. A collection of sources with unknown spatial distribution emit stationary random signals into the medium, which are recorded at two observation points. We show that the cross correlation of these signals has enough information to identify the singular component of the Green’s function, which provides an estimate of the travel time between the two observation points. As in the recent work of Y. Colin de Verdière [math-ph/0610043], we use semiclassical arguments to approximate the wave dynamics by classical dynamics. We also use the ergodicity of the ray dynamics to obtain estimates of the travel times even when the noisy sources have limited spatial support in the region. We show furthermore that this approach is statistically stable when the averaging time is long enough, and that the accuracy of the travel time estimation is directly related to the regularity of the spatial correlation function of the sources. Three-Dimensional Interfacial Green’s Function for Exponentially Graded Transversely Isotropic Bi-Materials
By virtue of a complete set of two displacement potentials, an analytical derivation of the elastostatic Green’s functions of an exponentially graded transversely isotropic bi-material full-space was presented. Three-dimensional point-load Green’s functions for stresses and displacements were given in line-integral representations. The formulation included a complete set of transformed stress-p...
متن کاملElectromagnetic Green’s functions retrieval by cross-correlation and cross-convolution in media with losses
[1] It is shown that the electromagnetic Green’s functions of any linear medium with arbitrary heterogeneity can be obtained from the cross-correlation, or the crossconvolution, of two recordings at different receiver locations in an open system. Existing representations are known for cross-correlations where time-reversal invariance is exploited and hence they are considered in lossless media....
متن کاملHydrophone self-localisation using travel times estimated from ocean noise cross-correlations
Approximation of acoustic Green’s functions through cross-correlation of acoustic signals in the ocean is a relatively young field that has become an area of interest over the past few years. Although the amplitudes of these estimates generally differ from those of the true Green’s Function, the estimated arrival structure can be highly accurate. Interhydrophone travel times extracted from thes...

Four surface-wave tomographic models in the Pacific Northwest and a combined CRUST2.0 and AK135 model are tested and validated systematically. Synthetic Green’s functions calculated with the models using a finite-difference method are compared with empirical Green’s functions at periods of 7–50 s. To ensure highquality signals, empirical Green’s functions are extracted from the ambient noise cr...
متن کاملShort Note An Improved Method to Extract Very-Broadband Empirical Green’s Functions from Ambient Seismic Noise
The extraction of Green’s functions by cross correlation of continuous seismic records at station pairs is best achieved in a diffuse wave field, where energies radiated by random sources have equal power. To partially satisfy the diffuse wave-field condition, original seismic records must be normalized as they are highly nonstationary and may have amplitude variations of orders of magnitude wi...
